Richard Joseph started Richard Joseph SalonSpa in 1991 after nearly two decades of being a stylist. He is a Master Stylist, registered in Alabama, Florida and Tennessee and has completed all levels of Aveda and Pivot Point. Richard's past work has been seen in Birmingham Magazine, Portico, Elle, Birmingham News, Birmingham Post Herald and Over the Mountain Journal. He has also been a guest on ABC, Fox's Good Day Alabama, NBC's Morning Show and CBS.
Kevin Conner

Kevin, a master stylist, joined our staff in 2002. He has since built his business as a hair designer and colorist. Kevin has extensive training in color and color correction. Whether you're looking for a natural look or a progressive edgy look, he can help you achieve it. Kevin's work can be seen on models in Portico Magazine, Health Magazine, Portico Wedding Magazine, at the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Portico Bridal Fair Fashion Show and on NBC's Mid Day Makeover.
Alan Sheffield

Master Stylist and Colorist
Alan began his business in 1982 at Studio and began working with Richard in 1984 after apprenticing under Martha Branum and Gerard. He also studied at Alabama Barber College. His work has been seen in Parisian Advertisements, Lily Heflin Fashion Shows and he has made several appearances, on local television segments, films and magazines.

Jonathan joins our staff from Huntsville, Alabama. He is a Pivot Point graduate and an Aveda-certified haircolor educator. Jonathan takes great pride in providing education to anyone with an open mind to learn. His work has been featured in the Huntsville Times, Go, Rocket and Huntsville Event magazines. His expertise in the world of color makes Jonathan the perfect fit for anybody wanting a fresh new look with impeccable color.
Michele Neely

Michele joined Richard Joseph Salon Spa in 2010; bringing 20 plus years of expertise with her. Michele has trained with celebrity stylists across the nation and is an award winning color artist, with the experience needed to correct or perfect anyone's hair color. Michele has extensive training in pivot point, Vidal Sassoon, and American crew hair sculpting techniques. Michele has been highly influenced by a vast international guest list, ranging from Paris to Tokyo. She has been compared to top stylists around the world.
Teresa Nelson

Master Colorist, Hair Straightening and Extensions
Teresa has been a master colorist and cosmetologist since 1975, an Aveda color coach since 1994 and certified in Phiten-Yuko Thermal Reconditioning since 2001. Teresa was featured on the Fox evening news when the Thermal Reconditioning was first launched. She updates her training yearly at the Phiten-Yuko headquarters in California for Thermal Reconditioning and attends Aveda color classes seasonally.
Rhett Ryder

Rhett attended Institute of Cosmetology Arts in Fort Madison Iowa in 1984. He has 28 years of years of experience in the industry and is fully Aveda trained. He has worked with Aveda color since its conception. Rhett has 5 years experience as the product knowledge coordinator at Salon Raymond Barry in Homewood Alabama, 2 years as the Artistic Director at Belk Salon Spa in the Galleria Mall and 2 years as a Senior Stylist at Richard Joseph Studio Salon Spa. Rhett's cutting and color and style varies from traditional to modern new age styles. Rhett believes personal style includes more then just a great hair cut or color, but a whole vision of body mind and spirit.

Emily Wright

Originally from Birmingham, Emily studied art and literature at the University of New Mexico before moving to Los Angeles, and eventually New Orleans, to work as a chef. She joined the beauty industry in 2004 and has trained extensively with Aveda since becoming a member of the Richard Joseph team in 2006. Hairstyling has proven to be a truly rewarding career, combining Emily's creativity and love of art with the deep satisfaction she finds in working with her hands. Her philosophy: Listen to the client. Work with the hair, not against it. Doing hair is about more than just creating beautiful colors and cuts--it's about building relationships. Each guest is unique, with his or her own set of needs. Emily specializes in low maintenance, fashion-forward hairstyles customized to suit the client's lifestyle and personality. Her work has appeared in Portico and Birmingham Magazine. Areas of particular interest include corrective color; unfussy, easy-to-style hair and men's cuts.
Angel Alexander

Angel has been a member of the Richard Joseph team for almost 4 years. She is a master cosmetologist specializing in haircolor, haircutting, upstyles and make-up. She completed the apprenticeship program at Richard Joseph Salon Spa at English Village in 2008, and currently presides in our Inverness Village location. She has in-depth training with Aveda for the latest trends for color and cutting techniques. Her work has been featured in Portico, Birmingham magazine, and has been seen in Portico Bridal shows. Angel welcomes new clients to show all the many talents she has to offer. She looks forward to many more years with RJSS.
Lindsay Garrett

Lindsay studied theatre and communications at Auburn University as an athlete. She comes to us with almost a decade of artistry under her belt. Lindsay has been certified by Sephora University as a Color Expert, and made her way to the Sephora Pro Beauty Team semi-finals in 2009. Her most recent work has been as a freelance artist for events and photo shoots and giving classroom makeup lessons. Lindsay's background is diverse, ranging from the everyday five minute face, to high performance for the athletic client, to avant garde.
Shelby McDonald

Shelby joins our staff from Richard Joseph Studio SalonSpa where he completed his apprenticeship. Shelby specializes in Bridal and Editorial work. He has been featured in Southern Beauty magazine, My Scoop and seen at Bromberg's Baubles and Bombshells, the Wynfrey Bridal Show, and the Humane Society Fashion Show. He is inspired by fashion, beauty and Lady Gaga. His goal as a stylist is to inspire beauty and teach others how to achieve it.
Daryl Walker

Daryl studied biomedical sciences at Auburn University before attending Aveda Institute Birmingham. She trained in Classes with Michael Baker, and James Ryder Make-up Labs. Her work experience includes the much-lauded William Edge Salon in Texas. Aspiring to be the best in her field, she is fostering her talents in all phases of the hair industry.
Kelsey Jones

After graduating from UAB with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and working for a dermatology clinic, Kelsey Jones has joined the Richard Joseph team and is well on her way to becoming a world class stylist. As she completes her apprenticeship, Jones is receiving extensive training in the latest Aveda hair color and cutting trends. She promises to show each guest her artistry with creative color and cuts, customized to fit whoever sits in her chair.

Michael joins the Richard Joseph team with extensive experience in the beauty industry. Having worked with a variety of product lines, including Aveda, Schwartzkopf, Bumble and bumble, and Keratin Complex, he can offer a dynamic perspective for the needs of your hair. Michael has a particular interest in texture services, offering everything from simple relaxers to Keratin smoothing treatments and Aveda permanent retexturizers.

This Birmingham native attended Excel Academy, a Paul Mitchell partner school, where she decided that the consistency between a cut, color and style is the most interesting aspect of working with hair. Michelle was a Top 12 Stylist of Birmingham Fashion Week in 2012, and her hobbies include her family and do-it-yourself projects.

In Spring of 2011, Tanner competed for and won a full scholarship to The Aveda Institute of Birmingham, shortly before joining Richard Joseph later that year. His interest for hair led him to be the successful Aveda colorist he is today.

Carey, a Huntsville native, graduated from Phase II of The Accelerated Learning Program at Paul Mitchell School in 2012, shortly before moving to Birmingham. He aims to expand his knowledge and practice with hands on experience at Richard Joseph.

Alex has training from Southeastern Cosmetology School and is finishing as an apprentice at Richard Joseph. It's his goal to "make everyone platinum blonde at least once." Drawing his influence mostly from the 80s era, he hopes to work in Hollywood one day. He also has a knack for brow waxes.

Susan began her career at Richard Joseph SalonSpa in 2000 as a chemical assistant, and has since completed the required hours for an apprenticeship and obtained her cosmetology license. She has attended various Aveda classes covering such topics as aromology, hair color, hand and foot relief. Susan also performs manicures, pedicures and wet room treatments in our spa.

Jennifer Manat

An original member of the Richard Joseph Spa team, Jennifer Manat is our Skin Care Specialist and also doubles as Massage Therapist. She studied physics, and classical Greek and Latin at the University of Alabama, where she won the Women's Latin Award, and twice was awarded the yearly Perry Classics scholarship. She has studied ancient, medieval, and Renaissance art and culture throughout Italy in UA's Alumni Campus Abroad program. She graduated at the top of her class at the Red Mountain Institute for the Healing Arts. Currently she is studying art history at UAB. Manat has fourteen years' combined experience in the spa and skin care realm, and worked as a medical assistant in a dermatology clinic, and as a medical spa technician in a laser clinic before joining Richard Joseph in 2001. Her medical work prompted Manat to educate clients concerning the ravages of sun damage, and ultimately preventing skin cancer. She embraces Aveda's holistic spa philosophy of restoring balance using a nuturing, high-touch approach. She has been interviewed in Birmingham Magazine, and has written and been featured in numerous editorials in Portico, About Town, and Birmingham Magazine.

Amy Self, a native or North Carolina, has lived in alabama for the last 35 years. She received her BSW from UAB and worked in the social work field for several years before graduation from the Red Mountain Institute for the Healing Arts in 2000. She received a duel certification in Clinical Massage and Neuromusuclar Therapy. Her modalities include Hot Stones, Chakra Balancing, Reflexology and Craniosacral Therapy. Amy was regional massage therapist of the year in 2009 for a national franchise. She has worked at Richard Joseph's since October 2011.

After his tours of duty in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, he decided to go to college and do what he loves. In March 2012, Joe graduated from Virginia College at Birmingham with an Associates Degree in Applied Science in Massage Therapy. While in college, he realized that he greatly enjoys the medical aspects of massage and took additional classes in atlanta to be designated a Medical Massage Practitioner, becoming one of only two therapists in Birmingham with this title. Becoming an MMP focused his skills in cervical sprains & strains, lower back and hip pain, and postural distortion.

Surekha joins our staff from a very diverse background. Originally from India, she earned a Master of Arts degree from Bombay University and taught high school physics. She is certified as a Microsoft Database Administrator and Solution Developer - all before entering the field of esthetics. Surekha brings eight years of skin care experience to our team and has worked with numerous product lines in spa as wel as medical settings. Surekha has publishes editorial work with the Birmingham News, FOX6, and Birmingham Baby magazine. Her philosophy on skin care is that "we can all have 'Happy Skin' by taking good care of it. It's all about preventing the aging process."

Jamorris Rivers is a native of Dadeville, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama and holds a degree in Spanish and Dance. As a ballet dancer, Jamorris has performed with several dance companies in Birmingham and toured internationally. Jamorris transitioned to study the healing arts at Red Mountain Institute. There he received dual certification in Clinical Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy. Jamorris' modalities include Hot Stones, Classical Thai, Chakra Balancing, and Reflexology. Jamorris worked as a physical therapy technician gaining a variety of experience and practice before entering the Spa at Richard Joseph. Now a post-baccalurate student, Jamorris is an assistant lab instructor for the UAB Biology Department.

Hailing from Brisbane Australia, where she had been working in one of the leading medical spas and graduated from the College of Natural Medicine with a diploma in Beauty Therapy, Rhada brings over ten years experience in the beauty industry. Her last five years have been focused solely on esthetics. She has worked in natural health centers in both London, England and Australia. After growing up in the skin cancer capital of the world, she is passionate about correcting and protecting. Her philosophy is, "What greater investment is there than your face? It's your identity".

A Birmingham native originally, Andrea moved to Ohio for 18 years at a young age, where she attended YSU. She has a Bachelor's degree in Art Education and an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts. Mother to a 17 year old son and married to a cosmetologist, Andrea was an educator an the Aveda Institute in Hoover, where she earned her license.
